Chapter 1 - A Surprise Encounter in Devon

It had been a rainy day, and Katrina — a very timid individual, as always — was at home reading a book, perched upon the windowsill, watching the drops trail down the glass. Her world was quiet. Predictable. Comfortable.

Then, as if summoned by fate itself, a crack in the clouds parted. A single beam of light slipped through and lit up her small reading nook with an almost golden glow.

She paused.

Perhaps it was a calling — a gentle nudge from the universe. Not something Katrina would normally entertain. She was far too reserved for such spontaneous adventures.

But today… today she stood up, closed her book, and wrapped her scarf a little tighter. She decided to wander outside — into the heart of Dartmouth, the town she had called home for so many years.

She wasn’t seeking anything extraordinary.

Just a warm coffee. A quiet corner in the local shop. And a familiar page to return to.

But fate had other plans.

Chapter 2 - The Stranger At 33 lower Street Dartmouth

Katrina had decided to make her way to the only coffee shop she would ever use — Dudley’s Café, nestled at 33 Lower Street, Dartmouth, TQ6 9AN. Her favourite hideaway from the world; a place where time moved slower, where the hum of conversation was soft, and the coffee always warmed more than just her hands.

As she pushed open the wooden door, the familiar chime of the old brass bell echoed gently, announcing her arrival. The scent of freshly ground beans and warm pastries greeted her like an old friend. Her usual spot — the seat by the rain-splashed window, close to the bookshelf she’d flicked through a hundred times — was already taken.

She hesitated.

In her spot sat a man she had never seen before. He was not local — she would have known. Katrina knew every face in Dartmouth, or at least she thought she did.

He was absorbed in a notebook, scribbling with such intensity that he didn’t notice her pause. His coat was damp, his hands steady, his coffee untouched. There was something oddly calming about his presence — like he, too, had come here seeking shelter not just from the weather, but from something else.

She chose a table nearby, not too close, not too far. From the corner of her eye, she stole glances at the stranger. The rain whispered against the window as if encouraging the silence between them to break. And then, almost on cue, he looked up and smiled.

Not a confident, rehearsed smile — but one with curiosity… and perhaps a little relief.

Katrina’s heart did something unfamiliar. It didn’t race, but it… shifted. Gently.

Was this the moment the universe had nudged her toward?

Or just another rainy day in Dartmouth?

Chapter 3 - The Stranger With No name

Katrina had always trusted books more than people. People, to her, were unpredictable — reckless, deceitful, sometimes cruel. She rated all humans the same. She didn’t discriminate. She didn’t trust any of them.

Men were thuggish in nature.
Women eventually turned on each other.
And society? It had rarely ever welcomed someone like her.

But as the man at the table next to her stood up to leave, something shifted.

He paused. Looked down. Calmly asked:

“Have you reached Chapter 6, Katrina?”

Her body tightened.
“How do you know my name?” she asked.

He pointed gently to her book.

“It’s written on the side.”

She glanced down.
Indeed, in fine print, was her name — scribbled there by her own hand when she had first bought the book from a local market stall.

She smiled, softly.

“I’ve not reached Chapter 6 yet.”

He gave the faintest nod. Almost proud.

“I think you’re going to enjoy it,” he said —
and with that, he turned and walked out of Dudley’s Café.

No name.
No reason.
Just a strange, calm man who knew her name and spoke like he had read the ending.

Katrina’s thoughts blurred.
How did he know about literature? Has he read this book?

She sipped her coffee, flicked a page, but her eyes didn’t stay on the words.
They kept returning to the door, to the empty seat, to the idea that perhaps — for the first time in her life — someone might have seen her as more than just a quiet girl in a café.

She smiled again.

For the first time in years,
Katrina felt like someone worth reading.

Chapter 4 - Take A risk And Ask

Birdseye View Of Dartmouth

Katrina sat in silence, the hum of the coffee shop now drowned beneath the waves of thought crashing through her mind. She opened her book again, flicking back through the pages to where she had left off.

There it was — Chapter 6.

Take a Risk and Ask.

Her eyes widened. That was the title. The very title he had spoken of. Had he read this book before? Was it a coincidence? Or was he... hinting?

Her heart, usually quiet and cautious, began to race.

No one had ever made her feel this way — uncertain, yet alive.

Without thinking, she slammed the book shut, the sound catching the attention of nearby customers. But she did not notice. She was already on her feet.

Her chair scraped back. She rushed toward the door, pushing it open with both hands as the bells above rang like the start of a story.

Outside, the rain had softened to a mist. The street was quiet. Her eyes scanned left, then right, searching.

Where was he?

Something in her — something new — refused to believe he was just a passerby.

She didn’t even know his name. But somehow, that did not matter anymore.

He knew hers.

And Chapter 6... almost felt like it had been written for her.

Chapter 5 - A Moment In Time

Katrina confronted the outside of Dartmouth Town, appearing from Dudley’s Café.
The Dartmouth scenery lit up — a brightness she had not seen in years.
And as she stared across to the right…

There he was.

She couldn’t control it.
“So what is your name?” she shouted.

He looked up, and smiled.

“It’s Edward,” he replied.
She tilted her head, eyes glinting.
“How very royal.”
To which, humbly, he said:

“Then perhaps not meant for me.”

Her heart melted.

> A humble man, who loves literature. Mysterious. And what pursued was… magic.

They took a trip down the River Dart.
They travelled upon the steam train across Dartmouth to Fington.
They even boarded the open-top bus, the Round Robin —
Sights, sounds, beautiful scenery that somehow…
She had never seen in this light before.

And as the sky darkened,
the stars began to shine…

A passing glance.
A breathless pause.

They kissed.

And just like that — the magic teetered on the edge of fading.

His final words:

“I have to go tonight…
but I’m hoping to move here next year.”

Chapter 6 - A Promise Returned

And after that kiss, she had fallen into a fantasy she could not escape.
Edward had said he was hoping to move here next year. And then… the seasons changed.

Spring became summer — brilliant, warm, and full of light.
Summer transformed into autumn — Katrina’s favourite season — when the leaves danced in the wind and the world slowed.
But still, a silence echoed from that night beneath the stars.

Winter came and went.
Spring reappeared.
But Edward did not.

Until one fateful day.

There he was, seated in Dudley’s Café — her café — just as before.
She smiled.
He looked back.

And how does Katrina’s story end?

Well, I can tell you.
We’ve been married for ten years now.
Happily.
With three children.
And we still live in the small town of Dartmouth, where this magic began.
